Compliance

What is DND?

A customer’s registered preference not to receive commercial calls or SMS.

Also known as Do Not Disturb

Customers can register DND preferences with their telecom operator. Promotional messages must respect them; transactional and service messages follow separate rules.

Example

A buyer on DND

A buyer in Hyderabad has blocked promotional calls and SMS by calling 1909. When a brokerage sends a promotional SMS about new launches, it is not delivered to that number. A service message about the buyer’s own booked site visit, using a registered service template, can still go through, because it relates to a transaction the buyer started.

Questions about DND

How do customers register for DND?

By calling or sending an SMS to 1909 from their mobile number, through their telecom operator’s app or website, or through TRAI’s DND app. They can block all commercial communication or choose categories, such as real estate, they are willing to receive.

Can a business call a DND number?

Not with promotional calls or SMS in categories the customer has blocked. Transactional and service messages tied to the customer’s own relationship, sent through registered templates, follow separate rules. Calls about an enquiry the customer made are also covered by TRAI’s enquiry window.

How do customers complain about spam calls?

By calling or texting 1909 or using the TRAI DND app, giving the sender’s number, the date and the content. The telecom operator investigates and acts against the sender, which can include disconnecting numbers or blacklisting repeat offenders.
