Also known as PE, PE ID
The DLT system separates two roles. The principal entity is the sender — the brokerage, builder or company. The telemarketer (TM) is the SMS or calling provider that delivers the traffic. The PE registers once with any operator’s DLT portal (the registration is shared across operators), gets a PE ID, and then registers headers, content templates and, where relevant, consent templates.
Because the PE is answerable for what goes out, it should keep control of its DLT account rather than letting an agency register in its own name. When switching SMS providers, the PE links the new telemarketer to its existing registrations instead of starting again.
Example
Changing SMS providers (illustrative)
A Kolkata brokerage has its PE registration, two headers and twelve templates on the DLT portal. When it moves to a new SMS provider, it adds the new provider as a telemarketer in its DLT account. Messages keep the same headers and templates, and nothing has to be re-approved.
Questions about Principal entity (DLT)
Do I need my own DLT registration to send SMS?
Yes, if you send commercial SMS under your own business name. Each business registers as a principal entity with its documents. An SMS provider cannot legitimately send your promotional or service messages without your own registered headers and templates.
What is the difference between a PE and a TM?
The principal entity is the business that wants to send the messages and owns the content. The telemarketer is the provider that technically delivers them to operators. Both are registered on DLT and linked, so the operator can check that a message is authorised.
