What is Auto dialer?

An auto dialer is software that places phone calls automatically from a list and connects the answered ones to an agent or a recorded message. In India, calls made by auto-diallers for commercial communication must be declared to the telecom operator in advance under TRAI’s rules.

Also known as Auto-dialler, predictive dialer, power dialer

There are three common types. A progressive or power dialer calls the next number as soon as an agent is free. A predictive dialer calls several numbers per agent, expecting some not to answer, and drops or queues the extra connections. A preview dialer shows the lead first and dials when the agent clicks. Predictive dialing produces silent or abandoned calls, which buyers dislike and which regulators watch.

TRAI’s September 2026 amendment to the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) requires calls made through auto-diallers, robo-calls, pre-recorded messages or AI voice to be declared to the telecom operator in advance along with the caller IDs used; undeclared ones count as unsolicited commercial communication. The enquiry window, DND and consent rules apply to these calls as well.

Example

Choosing a dialing mode (illustrative)

A Lucknow builder’s pre-sales team of 8 callers works fresh leads every day. A predictive dialer would raise dials per hour but drop some answered calls and would need advance declaration with the operator. They choose a preview flow: each caller sees the lead’s requirement before tapping to call, makes fewer dials, but has better conversations and no abandoned calls.

Figures are illustrative, not market rates.

Questions about Auto dialer

Do I need permission to use an auto dialer in India?

Under TRAI’s amended TCCCPR, commercial calls made through auto-diallers, robo-calls or pre-recorded messages must be declared to the telecom operator in advance with the caller IDs used. The usual enquiry-window, consent and DND rules also apply. Check the gazette text with your telephony provider.

What is the difference between an auto dialer and click-to-call?

An auto dialer places calls by itself from a list. Click-to-call starts a single call when a person taps a number or button, so every call is a human decision. Click-to-call raises speed without the abandoned calls predictive dialers can cause.

PropZolo’s telecalling queue is a preview flow: the caller sees the lead and taps to dial from their own phone, so each call is placed by a person; any automated dialing you run through a telephony provider must be declared by you.
