What is a marla?
A marla is a land unit of north-west India — Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi. The revenue marla is commonly given as 9 sarsai of 30.25 sq ft each, which makes 272.25 sq ft; 20 marla make a kanal and 160 marla make an acre.
Plots in many colonies and housing schemes use a rounded marla of 225 sq ft, so a “10-marla house” can mean 2,722.5 sq ft or 2,250 sq ft. Use the switch in the converter to pick the standard written in the allotment letter or registry.
This page covers India only. The marla used in Pakistan is defined differently, so these figures do not apply to land there.

Worked example
A 5-marla plot in Ludhiana
With the revenue marla, 5 marla is 5 × 272.25 = 1,361.25 sq ft. With the urban marla it is 5 × 225 = 1,125 sq ft.
The difference is 236.25 sq ft — about 26.25 gaj — on a small plot, so confirm the standard before you agree a price per marla.

Questions
Frequently asked.
How many marla are in a kanal?
Twenty marla make one kanal under both standards. With the revenue marla a kanal is 5,445 sq ft; with the 225 sq ft urban marla it is 4,500 sq ft. The ratio stays 20, only the size in square feet changes.
Why are there two marla values?
The revenue marla of 272.25 sq ft comes from the old land-records system and is used in jamabandi entries. Many town plots were laid out with a rounded 225 sq ft marla instead. Both are in use today, so the allotment letter or registry decides which one a plot follows.
How many marla make one acre?
With the revenue marla, 160 marla make one acre (43,560 sq ft), which is the same as 8 kanal. With the urban marla it would take 193.6 marla, which is why farm land is always measured with the revenue standard.
